How we support the local community

Spacehoppas Play Zone is owned and operated by APF Leisure CIC (Community Interest Company) unlike a Limited Company where the main purpose of the business is to generate profits which in turn are paid back to its shareholders as a CIC we have a number of legal obligations which are set by the Government CIC Regulator for example;
  • The main purpose of the business must be to benefit the community
  • Profits generated by the company from fund raising activities must be used to benefit the community
  • The company must provide the regulator with an annual report detailing the activities they have been engaged in that have benefited the community
This sets us apart from most other children's play centres in our main goal is to serve the community rather than generate profits for their owners. This being the case Spacehoppas has 3 key objectives;

Objective 1
To provide an easily accessible venue where local children can engage in active play and parents can meet, share ideas, gain peer support and build positive and long term relationships

Objective 2
To support as many elements of the community as possible by allowing access to Spacehoppas on a free basis

Objective 3
Operate Spacehoppas on a financially self sufficient basis which incorporates a range of fund raising activities such as pay and play and birthday parties which helps fund our community support and socially inclusive activities
We have provided examples here of some of the activates that help us achieve our objectives;

Parent and Toddler Session
Spacehoppas runs a parent and Toddler session everyday (during term time) from 10.00am to 3.15pm where pre-school children can mix with other children their age, develop their interaction skills with other children, learn how to share, play and build relations with other children and develop their confidence by experiencing differing levels of challenge using the range of play equipment provided.

The equipment allows children to take part in highly active play sessions which can reduce the possibility of obesity.

In addition Parents can share experiences with each other parents and learn from their peers experiences building positive long term relationships and building their confidence through sharing of ideas.

Spacehoppas asks for a contribution towards the session based on what parents in the Borough can afford to pay (approx £2.95) which includes the play time, access to all the equipment, a hot drink and toast for the parent and a drink and toast for each child.

Play and Eat for Free
Sacehoppas offers a play and Kids Eat everyday (during Term Time) from 3.15pm to 6.00pm. This provides all children with an opportunity to mix with other children their age, develop their interaction skills, learn how to share, play and build relations with other children and develop their confidence by experiencing differing levels of challenge using the range of play equipment provided. The equipment allows children to take part in highly active play sessions which can reduce the possibility of obesity.

In addition parents can share experiences with each other and learn from their peers experiences building positive long term relationships and building their confidence through sharing of ideas.

As part of the session every child is provided with a hot meal which always including a healthy option and helps towards providing a balanced diet.

Spacehoppas asks for a contribution towards this session based on what parents in the Borough can afford to pay (approx £3.00) which includes the play time and access to all the equipment and the children's meal

"Bring a class for free" Programme
We have had over 1,000 children visit Spacehoppas as part of this programme which is a win win for both the children and the school as most schools use this programme as an opportunity to motivate and reward pupils for improving in areas such as attendance or Time Keeping.

In addition to this Spacehoppas offers free visits to a range of individuals and community support Groups across Sandwell such as;
  • Disabled and Autism Support Groups
